HiI tried everything, searched everywhere and still cannot connect my Nokia Lumia 520 to my PC.I am usingWindows Phone 8 on Nokia 520Windows 8, Metro, and Windows Phone app on PCWhen I go to desktop mode every time I connect the phone via USB, it beeps acknowledging connection and charge. However in desktop mode the phone is not recognized on the drive list on the left hand side. I went to Device Manager and it is there on the 'PortableDevices' item under 'Windows Phone'. The driver is there. I uninstalled it, reinstalled it (dates from 2006!!!!) and still nothing happens. Every time I unplug the phone the 'Portable Devices' item disappears from the list to reappear when I plug the phoneagain. The PC is recognizing something but still not listed on the drives list.So.
No joy this way.I also installed the Windows 8 app 'Windows Phone'. Plugged the phone again, it beeps, waits for a while and then the alert 'Sorry there is something wrong, could you turn you phone off and on again?' Which I did a dozen times.Still.
No joy.The only way I have now is removing the SD card from the phone and transfer the files manually. As a 'cloud' or easy experience I think this gets 'nul points!' I did a bit more research and found a way around this. I installed the Windows Phone app for desktopAfter this my Lumia 520 was recognized immediately by this software and I was able to swap, sync and the rest. Bizarrely when I went to check the Metro app thinking that this download had somehow updated some drivers. It still does not work.So the Metro app is useless!I have also connected he phone WITHOUT the Windows Phone app for desktop opened and the PC still does not recognize the phone.
It only works with that particular software, a bit like an outdated Samsung Kies software running with and Android 2.0 3years ago.Not impressed.More news today.I was using my old desktop today Pentium IV running Windows XP Home Edition and out of curiosity plugged my Nokia Lumia 520 via USB. Although it asked for drivers to be installed it also open the window option for opening Windows Explorer or Media Player.So. It has been recognized (even the Phone name I have given to it — the Drive flag). When I chose the option of opening Windows Explorer it opened a new Window showing 2 drives, the 520 resident storage and my added 32GB SD Card. That is great news. How can Windows XP work and recognize the drives on a Windows Phone and the more advanced Windows 7 and 8 can't?Misteries.
